On the 14th of January 2022 Ms Tatenda Tahla (projects officer) visited the UNDP/GEFSGP project in Hurungwe with the objectives of

  1. Purchasing the pigsty construction materials
  2. Monitoring and Evaluation

The construction of a pigsty with 4 compartments is underway. Waste from pigs will be channeled to the biogas digester to provide dung to the biogas plant.  The Hurungwe Rural District Council and community leaders are provided the land for this project where 35 women will directly benefit.

To minimise transport costs the pigsty construction materials were purchased in Karoi. By 10am in the morning all the materials as instructed by the builder were bought. A truck was hired to transport the building materials to Bravo village. The materials were kept at the village head’s house. A lock for the door was bought for security reasons. An affidavit was signed confirming all the materials that were delivered.

It was noted that the metal poles are missing and they have to be bought.

Project Progress

  1. Orchard

As a way of reducing desertification and promoting reforestation activities, a community orchard was established in Bravo village. 300 fruit trees were planted in the orchard in December.  The orchard will support livelihoods through the harvesting of fruits in the orchard. In addition to that, the community will be able to set up household woodlots which they will manage at household level.

They have been a great progress on the orchard, the fruit trees are growing well. The beneficiaries had tried to protect the trees from livestock, however as the trees are growing, we now need fencing to secure the trees. A weed control chemical is also required to clear the orchard.

  1. Biogas Digester

TaLI engaged an expert Biogas Development Company of Zimbabwe (BIDECOZ) to set up the system and continuous technical support. This technical partner has 13 years experience, installed several biogas plants in Zimbabwe for individuals, institutions and NGOs and all plants working to this day. Trainings and exchange with the world’s leading biogas research institutes. Biogas Research Institute, China; Three Gorges University, China, mInistry of Renewable Energy (India). Technical partner registered and approved by Zimbabwe Energy Regulatory Authority. This activity involves the construction of a biogas plant for household use. This will also include the establishment of a gas scrubbing system, gas filling system on which gas filling processes will take place.

The fencing pole and gate were erected. Site plan design and setting out was done. Excavation of biogas digester pit is now complete. Biogas digester foundation construction is now complete. All construction materials are now onsite.
